Black Watch (Muted) tartan cloth. Brown and a grey blue replace the considerably brighter green and blue of the Ancient Campbell tartan.

I have commissioned a new kilt from Alexis Malcolm.  The tartan will be a muted Black Watch, which is similar to the many weathered or muted versions of the Campbell tartan available from the Scottish mills.  These “weathered” colours are designed to imitate the fading which would be seen in cloth coloured with natural dyes (before the advent of artificial aniline dyes).  This kilt will be constructed from 16 oz. cloth, a little heavier than the 13 oz. I’ve come to prefer in our Southern heat.
